WHAT ARE WE DOING?

TODAY’S ACTIVITY

Today, we are going to create fabric beads. We will take small pieces of fabric and create great beads. this is the way to reuse old fabric and ribbons. The great thing about this project is these are items you have at home.  You can use magazines, old maps and junk mail.  By using unneeded materials, it’s great for the environment because :

  • Keep objects and materials out of the LANDFILLS.
  • They forces us CREATIVELY THINK about the things we don’t want.
  • They are a RESOURCE to the Arts. A resource is something that is important, useful, or meaningful.

03.

WHAT WILL WE NEED?

MATERIALS

  • Scissors
  • Glue  (or DIY Glue!
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Straws
  • Fabric or Ribbon
  • Necklace Chord
  • Decorative Elements

And here are some great places to look:

  • Kitchen
  • Recycling Bin
  • Clean Trash
  • Junk Drawers
  • Deep part of closets
Click on the examples below to see pictures of what you can find!

Remember to check in with an adult about the materials you are using! You don’t want to accidentally use an object that someone wants or needs.

1.
CUT THE FABRIC INTO STRIPS, ABOUT TWO INCHES LONG AND 1 – 2 INCHES WIDE.
(YOU CAN ALSO USE PAPER INSTEAD OF FABRIC, FOR VARIATION)
2.
PUT GLUE ON BACK SIDE OF FABRIC. YOU’RE PUTTING GLUE ON THE SIDE THAT WILL NOT BE SEEN.
3.
TAKE PIECE OF STRAW OR PENCIL AND PLACE AT THE TOP OF ONE SIDE OF THE FABRIC. BEGIN ROLLING THE STRAW OVER THE REST OF THE FABRIC FLAP.
4.
YOU CAN CUT THE STRAW, OR WAIT UNTIL IT DRIES TO SLIDE OFF YOUR PENCIL.
5.
YOU CAN CHOOSE TO ADD YARN IN THE MIDDLE OF BEADS BY PUTTING SOME GLUE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BEAD AND WRAPPING A SMALL PIECE OF YARN IN THE MIDDLE.
YOU CAN DECORATE YOUR BEAD WITH THREAD, GLITTER, SMALL PIECES OF PAPER, MORE FABRIC, BY WRAPPING OR GLUING.
6.
THINK ABOUT HOW YOUR FABRIC BEADS WILL COME TOGETHER.
THINGS LIKE  SIZE, SHAPE, TEXTURE, AND COLOR WILL AFFECT THE OVERALL LOOK OF YOUR PIECE.
7.
LAST, PUT YOUR FABRIC BEADS ON A CHORD OR PUT THEM ON A STICK TO MAKE A WAND. HAPPY BEADING!

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT!

TRICKS + TIPS

Using your found materials, begin making your fabric beads and jewelry. Here’s a few hints on how to get started:

Think about SIZE.

  • Do you want to center a necklace with a larger statement bead or medallion?
  • Do you want all your beads to be uniform in size?

Think about MATERIAL

  • You don’t have to limit yourself to fabric! Try wrapping paper, post-its, or even magazines and newspaper.
  • You can add “spacers” between your handmade ones.
  • Spacers can include anything with a hole: buttons, washers, paper clips, etc.
