MFTA Gallery Opening: “To Shed New Light” by Cecilia André
January 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Materials for the Arts is pleased to present To Shed New Light by MFTA Artist-in-Residence Cecilia André. MFTA invites you to be transported into an immersive dreamscape of assemblage works featuring a vast array of objects and materials. While working at MFTA, André allowed herself to get lost to find shapes, shades, and textures, creating works that beckon for closer inspection and reveal tiny stories meshed together by delicate interventions.
Illuminating these pieces and compositions with colored shadows, André emphasizes the wonder of “transparent” light. She literally and figuratively sheds new light on the materials featured in her work, including everything from lampshades to glass vases, to figurines, trinkets, straws, floss, wire notebook bindings, and beads.
Art Workshop: Imagination Through Glass
At the exhibition opening, join us for a workshop with Cecilia André that investigates visibility with glass. This program is free and is concurrent with the artist’s solo show To Shed New Light. MFTA invites participants to fill a glass with glittery or transparent materials which will filter and reflect light in different ways. Further explore these built objects in the light and dark backlit areas of the art show.
To Shed New Light will be on view at MFTA Gallery through March 10, 2023. This exhibition was curated by Mina Warchavchik Hugerth.
