SUMMARY:MFTA Gallery: "All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing" by Mary Mattingly (Mondays - Fridays)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nMaterials for the Arts (MFTA) presents “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” a solo exhibition featuring recent work by MFTA Artist-in-Residence Mary Mattingly. As MFTA’s Artist-in-Residence\, Mattingly has had unlimited access to MFTA’s warehouse of donated supplies\, where she has upcycled found objects to create the installations featured in her solo exhibition. Her life-long fascination for water permeates through “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” swallowing the MFTA Gallery whole and leaving its visitors to meditate on the element’s simultaneous capacity to corrode and restore our physical and internal worlds. \n\nColorful assemblages of objects —pitchers\, books\, pedestals\, ceiling medallions— varying in hues and height create a vibrant tableau. Fabric butterflies\, plastic lemons\, animal figurines made from metal and wood depict naturalistic elements and showcase the dichotomy between natural and synthetic. Unified by the water that courses through them\, these fixtures’ renewal rests within this constant stream that breathes new life into the objects. In turn\, this faint trickle invites gallery visitors to pause and take time\, to sit with water\, listen to it\, emote with it\, and consider all the wisdom life’s longest partner has to share. \nMattingly’s exhibition name\, “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” arose from the artist’s wanderings through the MFTA warehouse where she found a collection of poems written by Alejandra Pizarnik of the same title. \n\nRead the press release. \nAll Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing” is on view through June 12\, 2026. \nThe MFTA Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9:30am to 4:30pm\, excluding federal holidays. \nMaterials for the Arts\n33-00 Northern Blvd\, 3rd fl.\nLong Island City\, NY 11101 \nImage: Photo by Sefan Hagen. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Butsu Butsu / Night Chat at MFTA with Eri Shoji (RSVP Required)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\n\nPlease join us at the Materials for the Arts warehouse on Thursday\, April 16\, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM for Butsu Butsu: a tea happening series led by artist Eri Shoji. Rooted in teaism\, the project invites participants to gather around tea and conversation\, exploring generosity through shared ritual and presence. \nThis spring\, Butsu Butsu returns for its ninth edition. As nine—the greatest of the single-digit numbers—this gathering marks a moment of fullness\, a pause before the project moves into its next phase. \nFor this edition of Butsu Butsu at MFTA\, the tearoom setting is composed through a process of foraging materials gathered from the MFTA warehouse; objects once part of other lives are brought together to shape the space where the gathering unfolds. During these seated tea sessions\, participants may respond through symbolic barter by creating small offerings using repurposed materials or by bringing a small item inspired by the occasion. Participation is open-ended; observation is always welcome. \nTwo seated tea sessions will take place during the evening. Each session is limited to 15 participants and requires advance RSVP. Guests are also welcome to join the communal craft table\, held throughout the event; RSVP is required as well. \nThis space is open for casual making and reflection using repurposed materials\, accompanied by light refreshments. \nThursday\, April 16\, 2026 l 6:30 — 8:30 PM \n\nAt the Materials for the Arts warehouse\n33-00 Northern Blvd\, 3rd fl.\nLong Island City\, NY 11101 \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
