SUMMARY:MFTA Gallery: "All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing" by Mary Mattingly (Mondays - Fridays)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nMaterials for the Arts (MFTA) presents “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” a solo exhibition featuring recent work by MFTA Artist-in-Residence Mary Mattingly. As MFTA’s Artist-in-Residence\, Mattingly has had unlimited access to MFTA’s warehouse of donated supplies\, where she has upcycled found objects to create the installations featured in her solo exhibition. Her life-long fascination for water permeates through “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” swallowing the MFTA Gallery whole and leaving its visitors to meditate on the element’s simultaneous capacity to corrode and restore our physical and internal worlds. \n\nColorful assemblages of objects —pitchers\, books\, pedestals\, ceiling medallions— varying in hues and height create a vibrant tableau. Fabric butterflies\, plastic lemons\, animal figurines made from metal and wood depict naturalistic elements and showcase the dichotomy between natural and synthetic. Unified by the water that courses through them\, these fixtures’ renewal rests within this constant stream that breathes new life into the objects. In turn\, this faint trickle invites gallery visitors to pause and take time\, to sit with water\, listen to it\, emote with it\, and consider all the wisdom life’s longest partner has to share. \nMattingly’s exhibition name\, “All Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing\,” arose from the artist’s wanderings through the MFTA warehouse where she found a collection of poems written by Alejandra Pizarnik of the same title. \n\nRead the press release. \nAll Night I Hear the Noise of Water Sobbing” is on view through July 9\, 2026. \nThe MFTA Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 9:30am to 4:30pm\, excluding federal holidays. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Join us on Thursday\, July 16\, 2026 from 6:30 — 8:30pm for the opening of “Lucky Finds: Second Chances\,” an exhibition of works by MFTA Designer-in-Residence Scooter LaForge. \nLaForge’s work has been exhibited at the Leslie-Lohman Museum in New York\, the Friedrichshof Museum in Vienna\, and the Spritmuseum/Absolut Art Collection in Stockholm. He also designs a celebrated line of bespoke clothing sold through Patricia Field’s ArtFashion Gallery. His pieces have been worn by artists like Rihanna\, Beyoncé\, Miley Cyrus\, he’s collaborated with Debbie Harry and Blondie\, his designs have been featured on HBO’s “The White Lotus\,” and he has created costumes for Madonna’s performances and music videos. \nIn his new exhibition at the MFTA Gallery\, LaForge utilizes his signature brightly colored painting style that incorporates pop culture imagery\, illustrations\, and found objects to create stunning artworks. Participants will be introduced to the origins and methods utilized in fabric layering\, from ancient practices in diverse cultures to contemporary innovations using technology. Through the evolution of piecing together textiles participants will experience first hand how to quilt a series of square pieces for a personal narrative\, using upcycled materials from the MFTA warehouse. \nPlease note: This is not a P-credit course. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Join us on Thursday\, September 24\, 2026 from 6:30 — 8:30pm for the solo exhibition opening of MFTA Artist-in-Residence sTo Len\, an interdisciplinary artist whose work has centered on ecological place-based collaborations with diverse landscapes and co-creations with communities and municipal agencies. \nThe cross-disciplinary nature of sTo Len’s practice spans printmaking\, video\, sound\, performance\, installation\, drawing\, and social practice work\, threaded together by a site-responsive process of making. Recent projects have included a Trash Museum in Kyrgyzstan\, a community pirate radio show in New Mexico\, and a series of plant-based printmaking while in residence at the Queens Botanical Garden in NY.
